Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Glabrous annual or perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems erect to ascending or prostrate, unbranched or branched.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate or the lowermost sometimes opposite. Margins entire to dentate or lobed. Sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in racemes or spikes. bracts small. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx 5-lobed, divided nearly to base, the lobes equal. Corolla yellow, blue, violet, or white, strongly bilabiate, upper lip overlapping lower lip in bud, 3 lobes of lower lip reflexed, the tube spurred on ventral side at base, the throat nearly closed by a palate. Stamens 4, in 2 pairs; anthers glabrous; stigma small, capitate. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, with as many cells; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Capsules symmetrical; cylindrical to ovoid or subglobose; thin–walled; rupturing irregularly at apex. Seeds usually numerous; angled or with thin wings; sometimes tuberculate.
